PP3D is a polypropylene for FDM printing, developed by Recreus with Repsol on the basis of its polyolefin expertise. It brings the properties specific to PP: fatigue resistance, low coefficient of friction, chemical resistance to acids and solvents, good electrical insulation and low density, hence its use for living hinges and flexible parts subjected to repeated cycles.
Adhesion, the usual weak point of polypropylene, is addressed by a dedicated Recreus primer applied to a glass bed: the first layer adheres at 40 °C and the part is released by heating the bed to 85 °C.
Processing
The manufacturer specifies 240 °C with a 0.4 mm nozzle and 5.0 mm³/s, up to 248 °C with 1.0 mm. The fan stays off on the first layer and is capped at 30 % afterwards, with a minimum of 10 seconds per layer to limit warping. Retraction is short, 0.8 to 1.2 mm at 30 mm/s, with Z-hop.
An enclosure and a draught-free environment are recommended. PP3D is stored in a sealed bag with desiccant and dried at 50 °C for 4 to 6 hours if it has absorbed moisture.
