The XL Satin Powder-Coated Steel Sheet is the spring-steel removable print surface developed by Prusa Research specifically for its Original Prusa XL large-format FDM printer. Made from spring steel with a satin finish (slightly textured mat powder coating), it attaches magnetically to the XL's segmented heated build plate and is removed with a simple flex at the end of a print to facilitate part removal.
The satin finish sits between the smooth and textured variants in the range: its slight relief provides controlled adhesion for PLA and PETG whilst supporting a wide variety of filaments, including advanced materials (ABS, ASA, FlexFill 98A, polycarbonate, PC Blend). The vast majority of these filaments can be printed without a release layer, making it a versatile sheet for workshops printing multiple materials on the same machine.
Printing behaviour
Direct adhesion is suitable for PLA and PETG without glue stick. ASA and PC Blend prints require a brim, skirt, or wipe tower to manage thermal shrinkage. For regular polycarbonate printing, applying a thin layer of glue stick is recommended to protect the PEI surface over time. The sheet must not be attacked with a pointed metal spatula: use only the spring flex to release parts once the sheet has cooled.
Care and precautions
Never clean this sheet with acetone: the solvent creates microcracks in the PEI texture and degrades the surface over time. Use isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on a cold build plate for degreasing between prints. Note that PEI coatings are consumables designed to wear over time: wear is not covered by the warranty, except for manufacturing defects or material failure.
