UNIVERSAL ULTRA Carbon is the carbon fibre-filled variant of Volumic's PLC (Polylactic acid Compound) composite. Retaining the base of the UNIVERSAL ULTRA range (high rigidity, thermal resistance up to 160 °C peak and 115 °C continuous, processing close to standard PLA), it adds a long carbon fibre reinforcement that significantly increases mechanical strength and thermal resistance, and brings the characteristic matt surface finish of filled materials.
This formulation is dedicated to functional parts under high mechanical stress: workshop jigs, supports, lightweight structural parts, prototypes close to the behaviour of production parts. Several packaging formats and colours are offered in the UNIVERSAL ULTRA range.
Processing
The filament prints at a recommended nozzle temperature of 225 °C on a heated build plate at 60 °C. The presence of long fibres mandates a steel nozzle (brass and copper/nickel wear rapidly) and a minimum diameter of 0.5 mm: a standard 0.4 mm nozzle will cause constant blockages. Build plate adhesion is ultra-strong, best exploited on a very lightly sprayed plate to preserve ease of removal at the end of printing.
Beyond this tooling constraint, the processing difficulty is rated "very easy" by the manufacturer, making it a composite consumable accessible to operators not specialised in filled materials.
Storage and documentation
Store the spool in a dry environment, in a resealable bag with a desiccant after opening, to preserve extrusion properties. Technical data sheet and safety data sheet (MSDS) available from the distributor for integration into HSE procedures and the workshop risk register.
