The XL Textured Powder-Coated Steel Sheet is the spring-steel removable print surface developed by Prusa Research specifically for its Original Prusa XL large-format FDM printer. Made from double-sided powder-coated spring steel, it attaches magnetically to the XL's segmented heated build plate and is removed with a simple flex at the end of a print to facilitate part removal, particularly useful on the large footprints typical of this machine format.
The powder coating applied directly to the metal provides a robust, hard-to-damage finish: if a hot nozzle crashes into it, the metal mass dissipates the heat without major surface damage. The texture from the powder coating transfers to the first layer of prints and masks most mechanical marks, making it a proven surface for series production on long print cycles.
Printing behaviour
The surface provides direct adhesion for PLA and PETG without requiring glue stick, and accepts a more forgiving Live Adjust Z than a smooth sheet. Prints release automatically after the sheet has cooled completely. The first layer may appear more compressed than on a smooth sheet; PLA parts with a small contact area may require a brim, whilst PLA parts with a large contact area may exhibit warping — a consideration amplified on the large footprints typical of the XL.
Care and precautions
Never clean this sheet with acetone: the solvent creates microcracks in the PEI texture and degrades the surface over time. Use isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on a cold build plate for degreasing between prints. Note that PEI coatings are consumables designed to wear over time: wear is not covered by the warranty, except for manufacturing defects or material failure. If the workshop also uses a smooth PEI sheet on the same machine, a new Live Adjust Z setting will be required when switching.
