Ultrafuse PLA PRO1 is a bio-based engineering filament developed by BASF Forward AM, positioned as a technical PLA for professionals simultaneously requiring speed, mechanical strength and surface quality. Its formulation prints as easily as a standard PLA but allows print speeds previously reserved for so-called "high-speed" profiles, while exhibiting mechanical properties superior to those of printed ABS.
By adjusting print parameters, the user can orient the profile towards pure speed, surface quality, mechanical strength, or a balance between these three axes. Quality control of production guarantees controlled consistency between colours and between batches — a point sought in multi-machine series production. Several colours and diameters are offered in the range.
Printing behaviour
The filament prints at a nozzle temperature of 200–220 °C on a heated build plate between 50 and 70 °C, with an extremely wide speed range from 40 to 300 mm/s. To exploit the highest speeds, it may be necessary to raise the nozzle temperature to 220–230 °C; at very high speed, surface quality may be slightly degraded.
Its very good inter-layer bonding increases the final strength of parts and their functionality. The filament deposits directly on glass or low-temperature tape, without the need for a closed enclosure. The material is biocompatible (Forward AM documentation available) and presents biocompatibility useful in certain regulated applications.
Applications and documentation
The target applications documented by the manufacturer cover workshop jigs and fixtures as well as functional prototyping. Technical data sheet (TDS), safety data sheet (MSDS) and dedicated print profiles (Ultimaker, Prusa, BigRep, Bambu Lab, Raise3D, BCN3D) available from Forward AM and the distributor, for integration into HSE procedures and the workshop risk register.
