ABS ULTRA is a professional Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) filament developed by Volumic, whose formulation is optimised to significantly reduce the warping defects (differential shrinkage and corner lifting) typically associated with standard ABS. This characteristic enables printing at lower temperatures than conventional ABS while maintaining good inter-layer bonding and a controlled surface finish.
ABS remains a reference technical thermoplastic for functional parts subject to moderate to high mechanical stresses and service temperatures higher than those supported by PLA. Several colours and packaging formats are offered in the range.
Printing behaviour
ABS ULTRA prints at a recommended nozzle temperature of 235 °C on a heated build plate at 75 °C, and is compatible with all nozzle materials (brass, copper/nickel, steel). Build plate adhesion is rated as normal, best used on a sprayed plate (3DLac-type spray), with a brim recommended on parts with low contact surface or high build height. Processing difficulty is rated "easy" by the manufacturer. A closed or semi-closed enclosure is advisable to stabilise the ambient temperature on large parts and limit any residual shrinkage.
Storage and documentation
Store the spool in a dry environment, in a resealable bag with a desiccant after opening, to preserve extrusion properties. Note that ABS emits fumes during printing: use in a well-ventilated room, or on a machine equipped with a HEPA/activated carbon filtration system.
